Reactions from government leaders were pouring in shortly after a shooting at Donald Trump\u2019s rally in Butler, Pa., Saturday afternoon, with Democrats and Republicans alike denouncing the violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no place in America for this kind of violence,\u201d President Biden said in remarks from the Rehoboth Beach, Del., police department. \u201cIt\u2019s sick. \u2026 It cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee to face Trump in November\u2019s general election, said he did not have all the details on others in the audience who might have been injured. When asked whether he thought the shooting was an assassination attempt, Biden said, \u201cI have an opinion, but I don\u2019t have all the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s rally \u201cshould have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem,\u201d said Biden, who is spending the weekend at his beach house in Rehoboth Beach.<\/p>\n
He said he was returning to his phone to get an updated briefing from federal agencies.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope I get to speak to him tonight,\u201d Biden said as he ended his remarks.<\/p>\n
On social media, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said he was sending his \u201cthoughts and prayers\u201d to Trump.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am thankful for the decisive law enforcement response. America is a democracy. Political violence of any kind is never acceptable,\u201d he posted on X.<\/p>\n
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) also thanked law enforcement and offered his prayers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned,\u201d Johnson tweeted.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Biden\u2019s campaign, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview plans, said the team was \u201cworking to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called the shooting \u201cdespicable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTonight, all Americans are grateful that President Trump appears to be fine after a despicable attack on a peaceful rally,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cWe appreciate the swift work of the Secret Service and other law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he was \u201crelieved\u201d that Trump was declared safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am horrified by what happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania and relieved that former President Trump is safe,\u201d Schumer posted on X. \u201cPolitical violence has no place in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former president George W. Bush, a Republican, called the shooting \u201ccowardly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLaura and I are grateful that President Trump is safe following the cowardly attack on his life,\u201d he said on X. \u201cAnd we commend the men and women of the Secret Service for their speedy response.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vice President Harris said she was \u201crelieved that he is not seriously injured.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting,\u201d she posted on X. \u201c\u2026 We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
