Yet parties are tied for their support."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Voters, ages 50 and up, will have a strong influence on the\u00a0November election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And politicians who want to win their vote would be wise to emphasize personal economic issues that affect them,\u00a0particularly Social Security, according to a\u00a0new AARP poll\u00a0of likely voters from the 44 most competitive congressional districts.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p class=\"\">When asked one question \u2014 \u201cHow worried are you about your personal financial situation?\u201d \u2014 63% of all voters and 62% of voters ages 50 and up said they are worried, according to the bipartisan survey conducted earlier this month by Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s a substantial majority of voters who are concerned about their personal financial situation, and why economic issues are going to play such a big role in in this election,\u201d Bob Ward, partner at Fabrizio Ward, said during a Thursday presentation of the results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, for older voters, ages 50 and older, Social Security is a top economic concern, the results found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The program\u2019s trust funds may be depleted in the 2030s, at which point there would be across-the-board benefit cuts unless Congress acts sooner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When asked how important Social Security is in determining their vote, 80% of voters \u2014 ages 50 and up \u2014 say it is either extremely important or very important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The issue ranks high as a priority for voters who are Democrats, Republicans or independents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cDemocrats only have a three-point advantage on Social Security right now, so the parties are basically tied,\u201d said Jeff Liszt, partner at Impact Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSocial Security is really an up for grabs issue,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Many voters said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who will protect Social Security, he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another issue \u2014 family caregiving \u2014 also ranked as a high priority with voters ages 50 and up. To that point, 80% of that group surveyed said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who would provide support to family caregivers to help seniors live independently as they age, and 74% said they would support a candidate who would provide tax credits to help cover the costs of family caregiving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While President Joe Biden has vowed\u00a0not to cut Social Security\u00a0benefits, former President Donald Trump said in a\u00a0March CNBC interview\u00a0that he would reevaluate spending on entitlements, which could include benefit cuts. Democrats in Congress have proposed plans to make Social Security benefits more generous, which would be paid for by taking the wealthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Social Security advocacy organizations including\u00a0Social Security Works\u00a0and the\u00a0National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare\u00a0recently endorsed Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For the National Committee, it was only the second time in the organization\u2019s history that it endorsed a presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe broke precedent in 2020 because we believed Joe Biden would fight for America\u2019s seniors \u2014 and protect Social Security and Medicare,\u201d Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe did not trust Donald Trump to safeguard either program or to uphold other cherished American institutions,\u201d he said. \u201cFour years later, those beliefs have been validated beyond dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When polling for the full ballot in the 44 competitive districts, former President Donald Trump led with 42% among voters ages 18 and up, while Biden had 37% and Robert Kennedy, Jr. came in with 11% support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Yet older voters, ages 50 to 64, are more likely to support Trump, while voters ages 65 and up are more likely to lean toward Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Congressional Democrats and Republicans are tied with 45% support in those districts. Yet voters ages 50 to 64 are the only age demographic voting Republican, with a 13-point margin.
