Ron DeSantis and Disney reached a settlement agreement Wednesday in a lawsuit over who controls Walt Disney World\u2019s governing district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a meeting, the members of the board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District approved the settlement agreement, ending almost two years of litigation that was sparked by DeSantis\u2019 takeover of the district from Disney supporters following the company\u2019s opposition to Florida\u2019s so-called \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d law.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption__container\">The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\">John Raoux \/ AP file<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 2022 law bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades and was championed by DeSantis, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches until he\u00a0suspended his presidential campaign\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p class=\"\">As punishment for Disney\u2019s opposition, DeSantis took over the governing district through legislation passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature and appointed a new board of supervisors. Disney sued DeSantis and his appointees, claiming the company\u2019s free speech rights were violated for speaking out against the legislation. A federal judge\u00a0dismissed\u00a0that lawsuit in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Before control of the district changed hands from Disney allies to DeSantis appointees early last year, the Disney supporters on its board signed agreements with Disney shifting control over design and construction at Disney World to the company. The new DeSantis appointees\u00a0claimed the \u201celeventh-hour deals\u201d neutered their powers\u00a0and the district sued the company in state court in Orlando to have the contracts voided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmark\">Disney filed counterclaims that include asking the state court to declare the agreements valid and enforceable.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on NBC NEWS<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allies of Florida Gov.
