Microsoft\u00a0on Tuesday said that it\u2019s laying off 3% of employees across all levels, teams and geographies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,\u201d a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC.<\/p>\n
The company reported better-than-expected results, with $25.8 billion in quarterly\u00a0net income, and an\u00a0upbeat forecast\u00a0in late April.<\/p>\n
Microsoft had 228,000 employees worldwide at the end of June, meaning that the move will affect thousands of employees.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s likely Microsoft\u2019s largest round of layoffs since the elimination of\u00a010,000 roles\u00a0in 2023. In January the company announced a small round of layoffs that were\u00a0performance-based. These new job cuts are not related to performance, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
One objective is to reduce layers of management, the spokesperson said. In January\u00a0Amazon\u00a0announced that it was getting rid of some employees after noticing\u00a0\u201cunnecessary layers\u201d\u00a0in its organization.<\/p>\n
Last week cybersecurity software provider\u00a0CrowdStrike\u00a0announced it would\u00a0lay off 5%\u00a0of its workforce.<\/p>\n
In January, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts that the company would make sales execution changes that led to lower growth than expected in Azure cloud revenue that wasn\u2019t tied to artificial intelligence. Performance in AI cloud growth outdid internal projections.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow do you really tweak the incentives, go-to-market?\u201d Nadella said. \u201cAt a time of platform shifts, you kind of want to make sure you lean into even the new design wins, and you just don\u2019t keep doing the stuff that you did in the previous generation.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Monday, Microsoft shares stopped trading at $449.26, the highest price so far this year. They closed at a record $467.56 last July.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
