The move drew Apple\u2019s anger, and kicked off a legal battle that has lasted for years.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Last month\u2019s ruling, a victory\u00a0for Epic Games, said Apple was not allowed to charge a commission on link-outs or dictate if the links look like buttons, paving the way for Fortnite\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Apple could still reject Fortnite\u2019s submission. An Apple representative did not respond to CNBC\u2019s request for comment. Apple is\u00a0appealing\u00a0last month\u2019s contempt ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">The announcement by Epic Games is the latest salvo in the battle between it and Apple, which has taken place in courts and with regulators around the world since 2020. Epic Games also\u00a0sued Google, which operates the Play Store for Android phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Last month\u2019s ruling has already shifted the economics of app development for\u00a0iPhones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Apple takes between 15% and 30% of purchases made using its in-app payment system. Linking to the web avoids those fees. Apple briefly allowed link-outs under its system but would charge a 27% commission, before last month\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Developers including\u00a0Amazon\u00a0and\u00a0Spotify\u00a0have already\u00a0updated their apps\u00a0to avoid Apple\u2019s commissions and direct customers to their own websites for payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Before last month, Amazon\u2019s Kindle app told users they could not purchase a book in the iPhone app. After a recent update, the app now shows an orange \u201cGet Book\u201d button that links to Amazon\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Fortnite has been available for iPhones in Europe\u00a0since last year\u00a0through Epic Games\u2019 store. Third-party app stores are allowed in Europe under the Digital Markets Act.
