Bank of America\u00a0CEO\u00a0Brian Moynihan\u00a0said Tuesday that the U.S. banking industry will embrace cryptocurrencies for payments if regulators allow it.<\/p>\n
The head of the second largest U.S. bank by assets was asked by CNBC\u2019s Andrew Ross Sorkin about how the industry\u2019s approach to crypto could change given President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0enthusiasm\u00a0for digital currencies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the rules come in and make it a real thing that you can actually do business with, you\u2019ll find that the banking system will come in hard on the transactional side of it,\u201d Moynihan said in an interview at the\u00a0World Economic Forum\u00a0in Davos, Switzerland.<\/p>\n
American banks have largely avoided letting customers use crypto for retail transactions, although their institutional trading and wealth management arms have participated in markets for bitcoin ETFs. Leaders in the industry, including\u00a0JPMorgan Chase\u00a0CEO\u00a0Jamie Dimon, have\u00a0lambasted\u00a0bitcoin as a currency for criminals and fraudsters.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you go down the street here and you go in and buy lunch, right, if you can pay with\u00a0Visa,\u00a0Mastercard, a debit card,\u00a0Apple\u00a0Pay, etc, this would just be another form of payment,\u201d Moynihan explained. \u201cWe have hundreds of patents on blockchain already, we know how to enter the field.\u201d<\/p>\n
The veteran Bank of America CEO didn\u2019t address the idea of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin as an investment or store of value, saying it is \u201creally a separate question.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
