McDonald\u2019s\u00a0will shutter three locations of its drinks-focused\u00a0spinoff brand, CosMc\u2019s.<\/p>\n
To test the concept, the fast-food giant opened its\u00a0first CosMc\u2019s location\u00a0more than a year ago in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, followed by six more in Texas. McDonald\u2019s has converted larger namesake restaurants into CosMc\u2019s, in addition to building smaller prototype locations.<\/p>\n
The smaller stores work better for the test, the company said Thursday. As a result, McDonald\u2019s will close three of its larger format CosMc\u2019s locations and open two more small Texas restaurants. The company didn\u2019t disclose the locations for either the openings or closures, although CosMc\u2019s website says a store is coming soon to Allen, Texas.<\/p>\n
McDonald\u2019s also shared other early learnings from the pilot on Thursday. Savory hash browns are the top-selling food \u2014 at any time of day \u2014 followed by McPops, the chain\u2019s mini filled doughnuts. Best-selling drinks include the Island Pick Me Up Punch, Churro Cold Brew Frappe and the Sour Energy Burst.<\/p>\n
The CosMc\u2019s test will continue for the \u201cforeseeable future,\u201d according to the company.<\/p>\n
McDonald\u2019s created CosMc\u2019s as its entry point into the growing \u201cafternoon beverage pick-me-up occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n
While CosMc\u2019s menu features some McDonald\u2019s classics, it also offers a host of new items playing off other beverage and snacking trends, like its iced turmeric spiced lattes, tropical spiceade and pretzel bites.\u00a0Starbucks,\u00a0Dutch Bros.\u00a0and bubble tea chain Kung Fu Tea have found success with younger consumers by offering customizable cold drinks.<\/p>\n
The name for the new brand comes from CosMc, a McDonaldland mascot that appeared in advertisements in the late 1980s and early 1990s. CosMc is an alien from outer space who craves McDonald\u2019s food.<\/p>\n
While it\u2019s unclear just how much McDonald\u2019s plans to grow CosMc\u2019s, it\u2019s still a miniscule part of the burger giant\u2019s overall U.S. footprint. The company has more than 13,500 U.S. restaurants. Still, McDonald\u2019s is hoping to learn more about its CosMc\u2019s customers; last year, it rolled out a loyalty program specific to CosMc\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
