Federal Trade Commission\u00a0Chair Lina Khan said Tuesday she hopes the incoming Trump administration will not let Amazon\u00a0and Facebook\u00a0parent\u00a0Meta\u00a0off the hook from pending \u00a0antitrust lawsuits\u00a0by her agency with a \u201csweetheart deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
But, \u201cI can\u2019t predict what future people in my position are going to do,\u201d Khan said on CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box.\u201d<\/p>\n
Khan\u2019s comments come as Amazon chairman\u00a0Jeff Bezos\u00a0and Meta CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0have made apparent efforts to\u00a0curry favor with President-elect\u00a0Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Those efforts have included $1 million donations to Trump\u2019s inauguration fund, and Bezos and Zuckerberg separately visiting the president-elect at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida home.<\/p>\n
CNBC\u2019s Andrew Ross Sorkin asked Khan how she views those moves.<\/p>\n
Khan said, \u201cIt is true that the FTC has been very successful, including in its ongoing litigations against Amazon and Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd so it\u2019s only going to be natural that those companies are going to want to come in and see, can they get some type of sweetheart deal, right?\u201d said Khan, an appointee of President\u00a0Joe Biden.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan they get some type of settlement that\u2019s cheap, that settles for pennies on the dollar and \u2026 lets them escape from a liability finding in court?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Asked if she saw that happening under the next administration, Khan said, \u201cI hope it won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut again, I can\u2019t predict that,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are set to go to trial against Facebook this spring, against Amazon in fall of 2026. Of course they would want a sweetheart deal, and I hope future enforcers wouldn\u2019t give them that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump last month picked FTC Commissioner\u00a0Andrew Ferguson\u00a0to replace Khan, who as the agency\u2019s boss has aggressively policed anticompetitive business practices.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
