{"id":12653,"date":"2024-11-26T18:01:59","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstriumphs.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/26\/walmart-pulls-back-on-dei-efforts-removes-some-lgbtq-merchandise-from-website\/"},"modified":"2024-11-26T18:01:59","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:01:59","slug":"walmart-pulls-back-on-dei-efforts-removes-some-lgbtq-merchandise-from-website","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstriumphs.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/26\/walmart-pulls-back-on-dei-efforts-removes-some-lgbtq-merchandise-from-website\/","title":{"rendered":"Walmart pulls back on DEI efforts, removes some LGBTQ merchandise from website"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Walmart\u00a0on Monday confirmed that it\u2019s ending some of its diversity initiatives, removing some LGBTQ-related merchandise from its website and winding down a nonprofit that funded programs for minorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The nation\u2019s largest employer, which has about 1.6 million U.S. workers, joined a growing list of companies that have stepped back from diversity, equity and inclusion efforts after feeling the heat from conservative activists.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p class=\"\">Some have also attributed changes to the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decision\u00a0last year that struck down\u00a0affirmative action programs at colleges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Those companies include\u00a0Tractor Supply, which said in June it was\u00a0eliminating DEI roles\u00a0and stopping sponsorship of Pride festivals.\u00a0Lowe\u2019s,\u00a0Ford\u00a0and\u00a0Molson Coors\u00a0have also\u00a0walked back\u00a0some of their equity and inclusion policies in\u00a0recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Others, such as\u00a0Anheuser-Busch-owned Bud Light and\u00a0Target, have\u00a0faced sharp backlash and falling sales\u00a0after marketing campaigns or merchandise focused on the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a statement, Walmart said it is \u201cwilling to change alongside our associates and customers who represent all of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been on a journey and know we aren\u2019t perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to\u00a0foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers and suppliers and to be a Walmart for everyone,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Walmart\u2019s DEI changes were first reported by\u00a0Bloomberg News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Among the changes, Walmart will no longer allow third-party sellers to sell some LGBTQ-themed items on Walmart\u2019s website, including items marketed to transgender youth like chest binders, company spokeswoman Molly Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She said it also recently decided to stop sharing data with the Human Rights Campaign, a nonprofit that tracks companies\u2019 LGBTQ policies, or with other similar organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Additionally, the big-box retailer is winding down the Center for Racial Equity, a nonprofit that Walmart started in 2020 after George Floyd\u2019s murder sparked protests across the country. At the time, Walmart and the company\u2019s foundation\u00a0pledged $100 million over five years to fight systemic racism\u00a0and create\u00a0the center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Over the past year, the company has phased out supplier diversity programs, which gave preferential financing to some groups, such as women and minorities, after the Supreme Court decision striking down affirmative action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s also moved away from using the term \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d or DEI in company documents, employee titles and employee resource groups. For example, its former chief diversity officer role is now called the chief belonging officer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Yet, Walmart will continue to award grants, disaster relief, and funding to events like Pride parades, but with more guidelines of how funding can be used, Blakeman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Some recent changes came on the heels of pressure from conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who threatened a consumer boycott of Walmart.
