CBS announced Tuesday that Donald Trump backed out of an interview on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d after previously agreeing to it, a characterization that the former president\u2019s campaign disputed.<\/p>\n
The network said that Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris each agreed to be interviewed for a special Monday episode about the election \u2014 and that Harris\u2019s interview was moving forward with correspondent Bill Whitaker.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter initially accepting 60 Minutes\u2019 request for an interview with Scott Pelley, former President Trump\u2019s campaign has decided not to participate,\u201d the show said on X. \u201cPelley will address this Monday evening.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung called the show\u2019s announcement \u201cfake news,\u201d saying there were \u201cinitial discussions [about an interview], but nothing was ever scheduled or locked in.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey also insisted on doing live fact checking, which is unprecedented,\u201d Cheung said on X.<\/p>\n
Trump clashed with \u201c60 Minutes\u201d during the 2020 election, when he cut short an interview with one of its journalists, Lesley Stahl, after growing frustrated with her questioning. Trump retaliated by posting unedited video of the interview on social media before it was set to air, a move that CBS called \u201cunprecedented\u201d and a violation of an agreement with Trump.<\/p>\n
Trump, campaigning Tuesday evening in Milwaukee, said he would \u201clove to do\u201d the show but wants an apology for the Stahl interview.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve asked them for an apology,\u201d Trump said. \u201cLet\u2019s see if they do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Real-time fact-checking by the media has been a point of contention throughout the election season. Trump and his supporters complained after the moderators at last month\u2019s ABC debate sought to address his false and misleading claims, including that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets.<\/p>\n
For Tuesday night\u2019s vice-presidential debate, CBS is broadcasting a QR code on the screen that viewers can scan to read real-time fact-checking.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
